The Start of Summer...

With only a few more weeks of school, Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center and satellite center Goodwin Community Center (Decatur Township) are gearing up for another summer filled with fun and learning.

Over 150 kids between the ages of 5-13 will attend Summer Day Camp at one of our two centers. Summer Day Camp, professionally staffed, is geared toward helping kids and their families who face challenges of extreme low-income. Throughout the summer, the kids will travel all over Central Indiana learning new skills and making new friends as they are exposed to a new world of opportunities. They'll explore concepts of leadership, self-expression, and even colleges and careers. Each day they'll benefit from a nutritious lunch and they and their families will have the opportunity to share a free, delicious dinner together.

Throughout the summer, campers will take responsibility for cleaning up and maintaining a local park, they'll learn theatre/art techniques (and then they'll produce their own Variety Show), they'll have adventures on the high seas (ok, well, actually canoeing adventures in a river!), they will participate in the library's summer reading program, they'll learn culinary skills from local chefs, and they'll visit up to one college/university each week--and that's only the beginning!

We invite you to be part of the fun by checking back often--we'll keep this blog up to date with the stories, photos, and artwork of kids who are being impacted by Summer Day Camp.
